The best AI girlfriend app depends on what you care about most. Candy.ai and OurDream.ai put looks and images first. Replika and Nomi lean on conversation and memory. Kindroid documents the most control over backstory and voice. Grok adds companions to a general assistant. This guide compares all six using their own published pages.
The six apps side by side
Here is the short version. Every value comes from the app's own site, its terms, or its App Store listing. Where a number is not on those pages, the table says "not published" instead of guessing.
| App | Best for | Free tier | Paid price | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candy.ai | Building a partner from detailed looks and personality choices | Free account; terms say free users can generally send up to 5 messages | Monthly, quarterly and yearly plans; prices not published on the pages reviewed | Browser on desktop and mobile; installable on iOS and Android |
| OurDream.ai | Customizable partners with images, video and voice calls | Free sign-up; limits not published | $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly ($119.88) | Not published |
| Replika | Everyday conversation, calls and long-term memory | Free Use with limited access | Pro, Ultra and Platinum; App Store in-app purchases run from $7.99 to $89.99 | iOS and Android apps; legacy web app |
| Nomi | Memory, group chats and voice | Free to start, no credit card | Not published | Not published; sign-in at beta.nomi.ai |
| Kindroid | Writing your own backstory, voice and appearance | New accounts can try it before subscribing | Not published on the main page | iPhone, iPad, Android and web |
| Grok companions | Animated companions inside a general assistant | Grok app is free; companions launched for paid SuperGrok | SuperGrok listed at $30 on the App Store; billing period not stated | iOS at launch |
Prices change often, and several of these companies say so in their own terms. Treat the table as a starting point and read the checkout screen before you pay.
How I compared them
I did not subscribe to six apps and log hours with each. This is a comparison of what each app says it offers, based on its own published pages: home pages, terms of service, and App Store listings. That has a real limit. I can tell you what an app promises about memory or privacy. I cannot tell you how well the memory holds up in month three.
Two things I did to keep it fair. First, I treated every company claim as a claim, and I label it that way. Second, I dropped DreamGF. Its site showed an age verification page that said verification was not available yet and that access from the United Kingdom was restricted, so I had nothing else on it to check.
What an AI girlfriend app actually is
An AI girlfriend app is a chat product built around one character who plays a romantic or partner-style role. You pick or design the character, set a personality, and talk by text, and in many apps by voice or with generated pictures. The character is software. It does not have feelings, and the better apps are fairly open about being AI companions.
That sounds simple, but the products differ a lot in what they are built for. Some are character builders with a visual focus. Some are closer to a daily check-in friend that happens to support a romantic mode. Knowing which kind you want saves money, because the pricing models are different too.
What to look for before you pick an app
Customization of looks and personality
If you want a specific partner in mind, customization is the first filter. Candy.ai lists choices for ethnicity, age range, eye color, hairstyle, hair color, body features, personality, voice and hobbies. OurDream.ai lists appearance in realistic or anime style, plus personality traits, interests, communication style, relationship dynamics and voice. Kindroid lets you set name, personality, backstory, appearance and voice for what it calls a Kin.
Replika also lets you shape your companion's appearance and details, but its home page puts the emphasis on the friendship side more than a build screen. Nomi talks about custom backstories and personality. None of these pages say how deep the sliders go, so look at the actual creation screen before you commit to a paid plan.

Memory
Memory is what makes a partner feel like the same person tomorrow. Every app here claims some form of it, and they describe it differently.
Nomi says it has short, medium and long term memory, and that it can recall preferences and past roleplay. Replika says it keeps track of your people, routines, plans and goals so conversations stay current. Kindroid lets you write backstory and key memories yourself, and says subscribers get Cascaded Memory, which keeps hundreds of recent messages in view. Candy.ai says companions remember what you shared and adapt over time, without explaining how. OurDream.ai says companions remember past chats and learn from them.
My read: when a company explains the mechanism, as Kindroid and Nomi do, you get something concrete to test. When it only says "remembers you," you are taking it on faith. That is not a mark against the app, just a reason to try the free tier and ask the character about something you told it an hour earlier.
Voice and calls
Voice splits the field. Nomi lists voice chats and hands-free calls, with tone that changes with the Nomi's emotions. Replika lists calls at any hour, and calls where you can share what you see on camera. Kindroid lists voice and video calls. OurDream.ai lists voice calls. Candy.ai lists voice conversations, and says tokens cover voice among other things.
Calls are also where costs can climb on token-based apps, so check whether voice minutes come out of your plan or out of a separate balance.
Images and video
Image features are the second biggest difference between the apps. Candy.ai says companions can generate images and appear in AI-generated video. OurDream.ai says both plans include image and video generation. Replika lists image generation and avatar customization on its App Store page. Nomi and Kindroid both offer selfies, and Kindroid also lists short video selfies.
Two rules from OurDream.ai's own FAQ are worth knowing about whichever app you choose. It bans content involving minors or characters that look underage, and it bans deepfakes and lookalikes of real people, including celebrities. A good app should have rules like these written down. Check that yours does.
Pricing model
There are three models in this group. Flat subscriptions, like OurDream.ai's monthly and yearly plans. Subscriptions plus a token balance, like Candy.ai. And tiered plans bought through an app store, like Replika.
Candy.ai's own home page says each plan includes tokens for voice, chat, image and video, and that you can buy more at any time. It also says "the more detailed your companion, the more tokens you'll use." Its terms add that subscribers get unlimited messaging and generally 100 tokens a month, and that unused tokens expire when a plan ends. If you plan to use a lot of images or calls, that is the line to read twice.
Refund rules vary more than people expect. Candy.ai's terms say refund requests must be made within 24 hours of payment and are denied if more than 20 tokens have been used. Replika's terms say purchases through the Apple App Store or its iPhone app are final, and that you manage or cancel only through the store where you bought. Read the refund clause before the first charge, not after.
Privacy and age checks
These are conversations people consider private, so look at what each company says it does with them. Everything below is the company's own claim, and I could not verify any of it independently.
- Kindroid says chats, audio, selfies and memories are encrypted in storage and in transit, and that data is not sold.
- Nomi says chats are anonymized and not shared with third-party sites.
- OurDream.ai says chats use end-to-end encryption and that no one can read them, "not even us."
- Candy.ai says data in transit uses TLS 1.2 or higher, says it follows GDPR-compliant standards, and says charges appear under a neutral merchant name on bank statements.
On age, the wording differs. Replika's terms say users under 18 are not authorized to use the service. Kindroid's page says you must be 18 or older. OurDream.ai shows an age verification gate that asks you to confirm you are 18 or over. Candy.ai's terms set the minimum at the legal age to form a binding contract where you live, and say it may ask for more information to verify you are an adult. Nomi's page did not state an age requirement. The Grok app's App Store listing carries a 16+ rating, which is lower than the others.
For a deeper look at the risks, our guide on whether AI companion apps are safe covers data, spending and emotional habits.
The six apps, one at a time
Candy.ai
Candy.ai is a character builder first. Its home page describes creating a custom companion or chatting with prebuilt characters, and says there are over 100 different characters in Girls, Anime and Guys categories. It runs in a browser on desktop or mobile with no install needed, and it prompts you to add it to your phone as an app.
What stands out is how much of the experience runs on tokens. Chat, voice, image and video all draw on them, and building a more detailed companion costs more. The home page shows a free trial and a "Create Free Account" option without spelling out limits, while the terms say free users can generally send up to 5 messages. Plan prices were not on the pages I could fetch, so the table says not published. Candy.ai is a good fit if you know exactly what you want your partner to look and sound like and you are comfortable watching a token balance.
OurDream.ai
OurDream.ai is the app our landing page sends visitors to, so I read it with extra care. It describes itself as an AI roleplay platform and gates the site behind an 18+ age confirmation.
The pricing is the clearest of the six. The monthly plan is $19.99. The yearly plan is $9.99 a month, billed upfront as a single $119.88 payment, which is about half the monthly rate over a year. Both plans include unlimited messages with any AI character, access to image and video generation, and 1,000 dreamcoins each month. The yearly plan adds a bonus 1,000 dreamcoins when you first subscribe. The page says "sign up for free" but does not list what the free account includes, and it does not say which devices it supports.
There is one oddity worth flagging. The site's page metadata claims over 11 million characters, while the FAQ cites 10 million users and 7 million user-generated characters. Headline numbers like these are marketing, and I would not weigh them in a decision. What I would weigh is the customization list, the voice calls, the stated memory, and the written rules against underage content and real-person lookalikes. It suits people who want one flat price with images and video included.
Replika
Replika is the old name in the group. Its home page says it built the first AI companion ten years ago, and shows 42,160,934 users worldwide. It is made by Luka, Inc., and it pitches itself as an AI friend more than a girlfriend builder, though its terms and tiers cover relationship-style use too.
The App Store listing says chat by text, voice call or video, remembering people, plans and goals, proactive suggestions, internet access, camera sharing on calls, image generation and avatar customization. The age rating is 18+. Terms list four tiers: Free Use, Pro, Ultra and Platinum. The App Store shows monthly purchases at $7.99 and $14.99, annual purchases at $49.99 and $69.99, and Replika Platinum at $89.99, without labeling which price belongs to which tier. It is iPhone and Android, with a legacy web app.
Replika fits people who want an everyday companion to check in with, with calls and a long history, more than a deep character design screen.
Nomi
Nomi markets itself on memory and personality, and covers friendship, romance, mentorship and roleplay. Its page says it is free to start with no credit card, but does not describe what free includes and does not list prices.
The feature list is long: short, medium and long term memory, voice chats and hands-free calls, group chat with several Nomis at once, real-time selfies, the ability to view images you send, proactive messages after you have been away, and internet and link access. The page claims "hundreds of thousands" of users. I could not find a stated age requirement or a platform list on the page, and sign-in points to beta.nomi.ai, so check the current app availability yourself. It suits people who value a character that remembers and who like the idea of group conversations.
Kindroid
Kindroid lets you define a Kin in detail: name, personality, backstory, appearance and voice, plus key memories you write yourself. Subscribers get Cascaded Memory. It lists text and voice chat, voice and video calls, selfies and short video selfies, group chats, and a beta feature called Rooms where friends and their Kins share a conversation.
It is clear about platform and age. It runs on iPhone and iPad, Android and the web under one account, and says you must be 18 or older. The page cites 4M+ downloads and a 4.8 App Store rating, both company-reported. Prices are not on the main page, and it describes new accounts as able to try it before subscribing without giving limits. Kindroid is a good match for writers and tinkerers who would rather author the personality than pick from presets.
Grok companions
Grok is different in kind. It is a general AI assistant app from xAI, and the companions are a feature inside it. Decrypt reported that they launched on July 14, 2025, on iOS only, for SuperGrok subscribers paying $30 a month, with three characters at launch including Ani, a goth-styled anime companion, and Rudy, a red panda in a pink hoodie meant for wholesome chats.
The App Store listing today shows the app as free with SuperGrok tiers at $10, $30, $100 and $300, with no billing periods stated, and a 16+ age rating. It lists iOS 17 or later. I could not confirm from those pages what the companions include today or which tier includes them, so treat the launch details as dated. Grok makes sense if you already pay for it and want to see what the companions are like, less so as a first stop for a dedicated partner experience.
Create your own AI girlfriend: a short walkthrough
If your goal is to create your own AI girlfriend rather than chat with a preset, the process is similar across the builder-style apps. The details below are general habits, not claims about one product.
- Decide the personality before the looks. Warm, dry, shy, playful. The personality is what you will read for hours, and the picture is what you will see for seconds.
- Write a short backstory in plain sentences. Apps that let you add one, such as Kindroid and Nomi, say they use it, and it gives the character something steady to come back to.
- Check the cost of detail first. Candy.ai says a more detailed companion uses more tokens, so a long build can eat into your balance.
- Set your own boundaries in the first conversation. Say what topics are off the table. It costs nothing, and good characters respond to it.
- Test memory early. Tell the character three small facts, change the subject, and ask about them later in the same session and again the next day.
Free tiers in brief
Most of these apps let you start without paying, and a few say so plainly: Nomi is free to start with no credit card, Replika has Free Use, and Candy.ai and OurDream.ai both offer free sign-up. The limits differ and some are not published. I keep the full breakdown of what you get without paying in our guide to free AI girlfriend apps. Use a free tier as a test drive, not as the plan.
Three mistakes that cost people money
The first is paying for a year before a month has passed. OurDream.ai's yearly plan is billed upfront as one $119.88 payment, and Replika's terms say website and App Store purchases are final unless the law requires otherwise. A yearly rate looks friendly on the pricing page. It is only a good deal if you still want the app in month eight.
The second is ignoring the token meter. On Candy.ai, chat is unlimited for subscribers, but voice, images and video draw on tokens, and the plan generally includes 100 a month. Heavy use of the extras means buying more.
The third is judging by the home page. Several of these sites list the same things: memory, voice, selfies, customization. The difference sits in the terms and the app itself. Spend ten minutes on the free tier and the refund clause before you spend anything else.
Which is the best AI girlfriend app for you?
There is no single winner, and I would be wary of any list that names one without telling you what it is optimizing for. Here is how I would match them, using only what the apps say about themselves.
If you want to design a specific look and personality and see generated images, start with Candy.ai or OurDream.ai. Pick Candy.ai if token-based pricing suits how you will use it, and OurDream.ai if you prefer one flat subscription with image and video access included. Because our partner link goes to OurDream.ai, weigh that disclosure however you like, and compare the prices above yourself.
If you want conversation and continuity over a visual build, look at Replika or Nomi. Replika has the longest track record and the most plainly stated age rule. Nomi has the most detailed memory description and group chats.
If you want to write the character yourself, Kindroid is the one that gives you the most documented levers. If you already pay for a general AI assistant and are curious about companions, Grok is the low-effort way in, with the caveat that its companion details were hard to confirm.

Boundaries worth setting from day one
A few habits keep this enjoyable. Set a monthly spending limit before you start, especially on token-based plans. Turn off auto-renewal reminders only if you will remember the date yourself. Keep real names, addresses and workplace details out of chats, whatever the privacy page says. And notice how you feel after a long session. If an app starts to replace the people in your life instead of adding something to it, that is worth stepping back for.
These apps are adult products. If you are under 18, they are not for you, and the age rules above exist for that reason.
Try a partner app that starts free
If you want to see how a customizable AI partner works before spending anything, our AI companion page walks you through creating one and takes you to the partner app, OurDream.ai, where you confirm you are 18 or older. Read its plan and refund terms at checkout, the same way you would with any app on this list.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI girlfriend app?
It depends on what you want. Candy.ai and OurDream.ai focus on building a partner's look and personality with images. Replika and Nomi focus on conversation and memory. Kindroid gives you the most control over backstory and voice. Compare the table above, try a free tier, and read each app's pricing and refund terms first.
Are AI girlfriend apps free?
Most let you start free, but with limits. Nomi says it is free to start with no credit card. Replika has Free Use with limited access. Candy.ai's terms say free users can generally send up to 5 messages. OurDream.ai says to sign up free without listing limits. Paid plans lift the message limits and add features.
Do AI girlfriend apps remember you?
Every app here says it has some memory. Nomi describes short, medium and long term memory. Replika says it tracks people, plans and goals. Kindroid lets you write key memories and gives subscribers Cascaded Memory. How well it works in practice is something you should test yourself on a free tier.
How much does an AI girlfriend app cost?
OurDream.ai lists $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly at $119.88. Replika's App Store lists purchases from $7.99 to $89.99. Candy.ai, Nomi and Kindroid did not publish prices on the pages reviewed. Token-based apps like Candy.ai can cost more if you use many images or calls.
Can I create my own AI girlfriend?
Yes. Candy.ai, OurDream.ai and Kindroid all let you set appearance, personality and voice for your own companion. Nomi and Replika also support custom details. Decide the personality first, write a short backstory, and check what detailed customization costs before you start, since Candy.ai says more detail uses more tokens.
Are AI girlfriend apps private?
Each company makes its own claims. Kindroid says data is encrypted and not sold. Nomi says chats are anonymized. OurDream.ai says chats use end-to-end encryption. Candy.ai says transit data uses TLS 1.2 or higher. These are company statements, so avoid sharing real names, addresses or workplace details.
Is there an age limit for AI girlfriend apps?
These apps are for adults. Replika's terms bar users under 18, Kindroid says you must be 18 or older, and OurDream.ai asks you to confirm you are 18 or over. Candy.ai sets the legal age to form a contract and may verify adulthood. Grok's App Store listing shows a 16+ rating.
