Best Free AI Girlfriend Apps in 2026: What Free Gets You

Person chatting with a free AI girlfriend app on a phone in a softly lit room

The best free AI girlfriend depends on what you want to keep for free. Nomi and Replika let you chat without paying, though both hold back features. Character.AI has the clearest free plan on paper. Kindroid, OurDream.ai and Candy.ai are closer to previews than free apps. Here is what each one publishes.

Searches for a free AI girlfriend are almost always about money in disguise. Nobody wants to be surprised by a paywall in the middle of a conversation they care about. So this guide skips the usual ranking and asks a narrower question for each app: what does the free version actually include, where does it stop, and what does it cost when you want more?

Free AI girlfriend apps at a glance

The table below only contains figures I could read on a page the app or its maker publishes. Where a number is missing, the cell says "not published". That is a finding in itself, because a limit you cannot look up is a limit you will find by hitting it.

How I checked these free tiers

I did not sign up to six apps and write down what happened. Everything here comes from each app's own published pages and help material, read on 25 October 2026, plus the maker's terms where they cover free versus paid use. That is a smaller claim than a hands-on test, and I would rather make a smaller claim I can stand behind.

A few rules I followed. If an app's own page states a limit, I use it. If only review sites state a number, I leave it out or flag the conflict, because those numbers disagree with each other and with the apps. If nothing states it, I write "not published". Prices change often in this category, so treat every figure as a snapshot and confirm it on the checkout screen before you pay.

I also dropped two apps I had planned to cover. Grok's companion feature and Talkie both came up in research, but I could not read a current official page for either, so they are not here. Better to cover six apps properly than eight loosely.

What "free" means for an AI girlfriend app

The word covers at least four different things, and mixing them up is how people end up annoyed.

  • A free tier that stays free: you can keep chatting indefinitely, with limits on the extras.
  • A daily allowance: the app resets what you can do each day, so the free version works but rations you.
  • A one-time preview: you get a fixed amount, then nothing until you pay.
  • A free trial: full access for a short time, usually with a payment method attached and a charge when it ends.

Those four behave very differently on day ten. A free tier is something you can live with. A preview is a demo. A trial is a subscription you have not been billed for yet. When someone searches for a free AI girlfriend app, they usually mean the first kind, and only some of the apps below offer it.

The second thing to know is what gets rationed. In this category it tends to be the same short list: how many messages you get, how long the app remembers you, whether it can send images or voice, and whether ads or waiting get in the way. Memory is the one people underrate. A companion that forgets your job, your dog and last week's argument is a much weaker product than one that does not, whatever the message count says.

The six apps, one by one

Character.AI

Character.AI publishes the most useful plan comparison of the group. Its subscribe page lays out three levels: free, a middle tier called lite, and c.ai+.

On the free level, the table shows basic memory, 15 pins, a basic Lorebook, full ads and slow mode. Lite improves memory, doubles pins to 30, and cuts ads and slow mode. The c.ai+ level removes ads and slow mode and adds the best memory and the highest feature limits. It is listed at $94.99 a year on the yearly plan, with the page also showing $119.88 and noting a monthly option without a price. The lite price is not shown.

What the page does not tell you is a daily message count, so I will not give one. It also does not say what age rules apply on the plans page, so check the app's terms before you assume anything. The free level is usable, but "full ads" and "slow mode" are the price of not paying. If you mostly want to chat with characters rather than one steady partner, this is the most honest free deal on the list.

Replika

Replika's Terms of Service describe a no-cost "Free Use" tier with limited access, and they add that Replika can deny it to anyone at any time. That is worth knowing: the free tier is a courtesy, not a contract.

The same document lists what sits on the paid side under Replika Pro: relationship status, premium activities, selfies, image generation, voice messaging, background calls, daily gems and premium voices. So if you want your Replika to be a romantic partner in name, or to send you voice notes, that is behind the paywall. The Terms give no prices and point to the in-app subscription screens, and say prices can change without notice.

Two facts from the Terms matter for your wallet. Paid plans can bill monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually and renew automatically until you cancel, and cancelling has to happen through the store where you bought. Refunds are not available for a partial-month period. You also have to be 18 or older: the Terms say anyone under 18 is not authorised to use the service.

Nomi

Nomi is the clearest case of a real free tier with a daily cap. Its site says you can create a Nomi and chat with no credit card, and that free accounts include daily messages and images. Its own comparison article says free accounts get two images a day, against forty image credits a day for subscribers, and that the creation process never asks for billing information.

The daily message number is not published, so I cannot tell you how fast you will hit it. Voice calls, extra Nomis and unlimited messaging sit behind a subscription. Nomi's terms add that if you cancel everything you keep the free features, which is a useful reassurance: you do not lose the account, only the extras.

The paid prices, from Nomi's own article, are $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. The yearly plan works out to about $8.33 a month, roughly half the monthly rate. Nomi requires you to be 18 and asks for a date of birth when you sign up. Payments are generally nonrefundable, and subscriptions renew until you cancel.

Kindroid

Kindroid is where "free" needs the most care, because its own documentation describes a preview, not a free plan. New accounts get a one-time preview on the flagship model: 50 messages, 5 selfies, 5,000 audio credits and up to 2 Kindroids. Regenerating or continuing a reply counts as half a message, so the 50 goes further than it sounds if you chat plainly and less far if you keep retrying.

When the preview ends, the account becomes read-only. You can still view, export and delete your data, but you cannot send messages, make calls or receive proactive messages. Starting a trial or subscription ends the preview for good.

The 3-day trial is a separate thing. It requires a payment method, converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel, and on web needs a verified mobile number. Specific prices are not on the page. It says checkout shows the price for your country and platform, that web prices are usually lower than App Store or Google Play prices, and that longer plans cost less per month. If you are comparing, ignore the word free here and think of Kindroid as a paid app with a short sample.

OurDream.ai

This is the app our landing page links to, so I will be plain about what I could and could not confirm. OurDream.ai's own page invites you to sign up for free, marks the site as adults only, and requires you to confirm you are 18 or older and agree to the terms before you enter.

The pricing it publishes is for paid plans only: $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly as a single $119.88 payment. Both include unlimited messages with any AI character, access to image and video generation and 1,000 Dreamcoins a month, and the yearly plan adds a one-time bonus of 1,000 Dreamcoins. The page does not describe the free plan, so I cannot give you a free message limit or say what free users can generate.

Third-party review sites do put numbers on the free plan, but they disagree with each other, one saying a daily message cap and another saying a coin per message, so I am not repeating either. If the free plan is your deciding factor, sign up and read the account screen before you spend anything. That is the honest answer, and I would give the same one for any app on this list.

Candy.ai

Candy.ai's homepage describes a free trial for people who are curious or cautious, with "Join Free" and "Create Free Account" options and no app to install. It does not say what the trial includes or where it stops.

Paid plans come in monthly, quarterly and yearly lengths, and each includes a batch of tokens for voice, chat, images and video, with more available to buy. More detailed companions use more tokens. Dollar amounts are not on the homepage, and the page does not state a minimum age for users. Review sites quote a very small message allowance for the free account, but I could not confirm it from Candy.ai itself, so I leave the number out.

The practical point is the token model. A token system means the headline subscription price is not the whole cost if you use images and voice a lot, because those draw down tokens that you may have to top up.

Which is the best free AI girlfriend for you

There is no single best free AI girlfriend, but the situations sort out cleanly.

  • If you want to stay free for a long time, Nomi and Character.AI are the two with a free level that continues. Nomi gives you one steady companion with daily messages and images. Character.AI gives you a wide choice of characters with ads and slow mode.
  • If you want a romantic framing without paying, Replika is the one to be careful with: relationship status is a Pro feature in its Terms.
  • If you want to see how good the paid experience is before committing, Kindroid's preview and OurDream.ai's free sign-up are the closest to a sampler, but check the limits on the account screen first.
  • If images and voice matter most, expect all six to charge for them, either as a subscription or through tokens or coins.

My own lean, and it is an opinion rather than a result: start with Nomi if you want a companion you can talk to daily without a card, and start with Character.AI if you would rather browse many characters. Both let you find out whether the whole idea suits you before it costs anything. If you already know you want the paid experience, our best AI girlfriend apps comparison covers the picks on quality rather than price.

When paying is worth it

Pay when the thing you are rationed on is the thing you came for. If the free version stops you from talking, the subscription is the product. If it only stops you from receiving images, you may be paying for something you did not need.

Three questions help. First, did you hit the daily limit more than a few times in a week? If yes, you are a real user and the upgrade will be used. Second, does the paid tier fix the thing that annoys you? Character.AI's upgrade removes ads and slow mode, which matters if waiting is the annoyance and does nothing if memory is. Third, what is the cheapest way in? Annual plans cut the monthly rate on most of these apps: Nomi's yearly price is about half its monthly rate, and OurDream.ai's yearly plan is half its monthly price per month. The catch is that you commit up front, and refunds are limited on several of them.

If you do pay, do it on the web where the app lets you. Kindroid says web prices are usually lower than App Store or Google Play prices. And put a reminder in your calendar for the renewal date, because Replika and Nomi both renew automatically until you cancel.

Free-tier traps to watch for

A few patterns repeat across the apps, and they are worth knowing before you get attached.

  1. The trial that is really a subscription. Kindroid's 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts unless you cancel. Check the cancellation route before you start.
  2. The free tier that can disappear. Replika's Terms say it can deny Free Use at its discretion. Do not build a routine on something the company can withdraw.
  3. The cap you cannot look up. Nomi, OurDream.ai and Candy.ai do not publish a free message count on the pages I read. Assume it is small until you see otherwise.
  4. The token or coin budget. Subscriptions that include a monthly batch of tokens or Dreamcoins can run dry if you use images, voice or video heavily.
  5. The account that goes read-only. Kindroid keeps your data viewable and exportable after the preview, which is fair, but your companion stops answering.

There is also a quieter risk that has nothing to do with price: what happens to your conversations. A free app is still storing what you say. Our guide on whether AI companion apps are safe covers privacy and what to check, and it is worth reading before you share anything personal with any of these.

What about companions beyond girlfriends

If you are not after a romantic partner, most of the same free-tier rules apply to friend and coaching style apps, and the options widen. Our roundup of the best AI companion apps covers that wider set, including the ones that are better for conversation practice than for anything romantic.

If you want to try OurDream.ai

Since our landing page points to OurDream.ai, here is the fair summary. Its paid plans are published and clear: $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, each with unlimited messages and 1,000 Dreamcoins a month. Its free plan is not described on its own site, so judge it by what you see after you sign up rather than by anything a review says, including this one.

If that sounds like what you want, you can read more and continue from our AI companion page. It is an 18+ product, and the age check is real. Use the account screen to read your limits before you decide to pay, and treat any plan as something you can cancel rather than something you owe.

The short version

Free AI girlfriend apps range from a genuinely usable tier to a thin sample. Nomi and Character.AI are the ones where free keeps working. Replika keeps its romantic features for Pro. Kindroid, OurDream.ai and Candy.ai are best treated as try-before-you-buy. Read the limits on the screen, pick the annual plan only after a month you actually used, and keep the cancellation date somewhere you will see it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI girlfriend app?

It depends on what you want to keep free. Nomi lets you create a companion and chat without a card, with daily messages and two images a day. Character.AI has a free level with basic memory, 15 pins, ads and slow mode. Both let you test the idea before paying. Daily message counts are not published for Nomi.

Is there an AI girlfriend with no sign-up?

None of the pages I read describes a no-account option. Nomi says you need an account to talk to your Nomi, though it asks for no credit card. OurDream.ai and Candy.ai both lead with a free sign-up, and Kindroid's preview belongs to a new account. Expect to register, but not always to pay.

Is Replika free?

Replika has a no-cost Free Use tier with limited access, and its Terms say it can deny that tier to anyone at any time. Relationship status, image generation, voice messaging, background calls and premium voices are listed as Replika Pro features. Prices are not in the Terms and are shown in the app.

Is Kindroid free?

Not as an ongoing plan. Kindroid's documentation describes a one-time preview for new accounts: 50 messages, 5 selfies and up to 2 Kindroids. After that the account is read-only. A separate 3-day trial needs a payment method and becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel.

Do free AI girlfriend apps limit messages?

Some do and some do not say. Kindroid gives 50 messages once. Nomi gives a daily allowance of messages and images but does not publish the message count. Character.AI's plan table lists limited features and slow mode for free users without a message number. OurDream.ai and Candy.ai do not publish free limits on their own pages.

Can I use a free AI girlfriend app if I am under 18?

No. Replika's Terms say users under 18 are not authorised to use the service, and Nomi's terms say under-18s cannot use the platform under any circumstances. OurDream.ai requires visitors to confirm they are 18 or older before entering. These are 18+ products and the age checks apply to free accounts too.

When is it worth paying for an AI girlfriend app?

Pay when the free limit blocks what you came for, not before. If you keep hitting the daily cap, or the paid tier fixes your main annoyance such as ads, slow mode or memory, an upgrade makes sense. Choose an annual plan only after a month of real use, and note the renewal date.

Will a free trial charge me automatically?

It can. Kindroid's 3-day trial requires a payment method and converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled. Replika and Nomi subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Cancel on the platform where you bought, before the renewal date.
