Best AI Chatbot for Roleplay in 2026: 10 Apps Compared

Best AI chatbot for roleplay comparison: laptop and phone showing AI roleplay chat with fantasy characters

The best AI chatbot for roleplay depends on how long your stories run and how much filtering you accept. SpicyChat and JanitorAI suit character chat with large bot libraries. AI Dungeon and NovelAI suit long, lore-heavy stories. Kindroid and Nomi suit one ongoing character. Character.AI is the filtered option, and SillyTavern is for people who want full control.

The ten roleplay apps side by side

Every value in this table comes from the app's own site, help center, docs, pricing FAQ or app store listing, plus two press reports where the company's own page was not reachable. Where a number is not on those pages, the table says "not published" instead of guessing. Context figures are in tokens, which is roughly how much recent text the model can see at once.

How I put this together

I did not run long test campaigns in ten apps. This comparison is based on each app's own published pages and docs: home pages, help centers, pricing FAQs, and App Store or Google Play listings. For two Character.AI details I used press reports from TechCrunch and Voicebot, because Character.AI's help center blocked automated reading.

That has a real limit. I can tell you that SpicyChat documents an 8,192 token context on its middle tier. I cannot tell you how well a given bot keeps its personality at message 400. What I can do is point at the numbers that predict it, and show you how to check them yourself on a free tier.

What makes a good roleplay bot

Most "best ai roleplay sites" lists rank apps by vibes. Roleplay quality comes down to four mechanical things, and every app here handles them differently. Once you know them, the marketing pages get much easier to read.

Context and memory

The context window is how much of the conversation the model can see when it writes the next reply. When a scene scrolls past it, the bot forgets. JanitorAI's help center says its built-in model has a context of roughly 8k to 9k tokens, and calls the decay past that point "context rot." SpicyChat publishes its limits by tier: 4,096 tokens free, 8,192 on True Supporter, and up to 32,768 on I'm All In depending on the model. AI Dungeon runs from 4k on its free tier to 32k on its top tiers.

Memory is the layer on top. These are notes the app keeps outside the scrolling chat so the bot can recall them later. Character.AI uses memory pins. AI Dungeon has a Memory Bank, with 25 memories on the free tier and up to 800 on Ultimate. Nomi says it has short, medium and long term memory. Kindroid gives subscribers Cascaded Memory, which it says keeps hundreds of recent messages in view.

My rule of thumb: an app that publishes a token number is giving you something you can plan around. "Remembers everything" is not a number.

Persona cards

A persona card, or character card, is the written definition of a bot: name, personality, how it talks, the opening message, and sometimes example dialogue. SillyTavern's docs describe character cards as sets of prompts that define how the model behaves. JanitorAI and SpicyChat both build their bot libraries around the same idea, and SpicyChat lets you import characters from elsewhere.

Many apps also let you write a card for yourself, often called a user persona. That tells the bot who it is talking to, so you are not re-explaining your character every scene.

Lorebooks

A lorebook is the feature that separates serious roleplay tools from casual chat apps. It is a set of entries about places, people, factions and rules, each tied to keywords. When a keyword shows up in the chat, the matching entry gets slipped into the context. The rest of the time it stays out and costs nothing.

Four apps here document one. SpicyChat's Lorebook checks the last 4 messages for keywords and keeps an entry active for about 2 turns. It caps lore at about 20% of context: roughly 740 tokens free, 1,600 on True Supporter and 3,080 on I'm All In. SillyTavern calls the same thing World Info and supports regex keys and a token budget. NovelAI's Lorebook uses activation keys and supports always-on entries. AI Dungeon calls them Story Cards, and its help page says they are among the first things dropped when context fills. Character.AI's September 2026 post also lists Lorebook compatibility as part of c.ai+.

Context, persona cards, lorebooks and model choice decide how well a roleplay bot holds a story together.

Model choice

The model is the engine. Some apps give you one house model. Others let you switch. SpicyChat lists several AI models among its premium features, including DeepSeek V3. JanitorAI lets users connect third-party models through a proxy, and its paid Janitor+ Router lets subscribers pick third-party models inside the site and compare their costs and context sizes. SillyTavern goes furthest: it has no model of its own and connects to AI Horde, OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby, NovelAI and others.

Chai takes the opposite route. Its company site says it serves hundreds of in-house trained models and blends several of them. NovelAI's home page names GLM 4.6 for story generation, and its subscription page lists Xialong as an Opus-only model.

An honest word on filters

Filters are the reason most people go looking for character ai alternatives for roleplay. Here is what the companies actually publish, without the hype.

  • Character.AI is the filtered option. Its App Store listing says 18+ with content restrictions. In late 2025 it ended open-ended chat for users under 18, according to TechCrunch.
  • AI Dungeon lets you choose. Safe blocks sexual, hateful, violent or triggering content, Moderate limits it, and Mature does not restrict it. You must confirm you are 18 or older to turn on Mature.
  • JanitorAI is for adults only and asks creators to tag adult or romantic bots "Limitless" and general bots "Limited." Its mobile app has adult content off by default.
  • SpicyChat allows private adult roleplay but locks NSFW content behind age verification in places that require it, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia and many US states.
  • Nomi says on its home page that AI should remain "unfiltered and uncensored."
  • SillyTavern has no filter of its own. Whatever the connected model or API allows is what you get.

"Unfiltered" never means "no rules." Every adult platform here that publishes rules bans content involving minors, and JanitorAI and OurDream.ai both spell out more bans, including real-person harassment or lookalikes. If you want adult roleplay specifically, our sibling guide to the best NSFW AI chat apps goes deeper on that side.

The ten apps, one at a time

SpicyChat.ai: best all-round roleplay chat

SpicyChat is the most completely documented roleplay chat app in this group. It publishes its context limits, reply lengths, lorebook budget and prices, which almost nobody else does. Free and Get A Taste users get up to 4,096 tokens of context and replies up to 180 tokens. True Supporter doubles context to 8,192 and lifts replies to 300 tokens. I'm All In goes up to 32,768 tokens depending on the model.

Group Chat holds 2 to 10 bots in one scene, and both free and paid users can use it. Paid users get Auto Response, where the system picks who speaks next. Free users pick each responder by hand, which some roleplayers prefer anyway. Group chats do not support text-to-speech or images. There are also Rulebooks with meters, which let a creator track story stats as a scene goes on, plus Semantic Memory 2.0 and a Memory Manager under premium features.

Prices since September 8, 2026: Get A Taste is $5.95 a month or $60 a year, True Supporter $19.95 or $199.95, and I'm All In $29.95 or $299.95. Existing subscribers keep their old price unless they change plans. SpicyChat suits people who want a big bot library, group scenes and real numbers to plan around.

JanitorAI: best free roleplay with a huge library

JanitorAI is a community bot site first. Its help FAQ says free users get unlimited chats with millions of bots and standard chat models, with a context limit of around 9k tokens, and that the free option will always remain. Janitor+ adds 5x more context, faster replies, monthly swipes with the best models and a few cosmetic perks. The FAQ links out to a pricing page instead of stating the price, and that page would not load for me, so I list the price as not published.

What makes JanitorAI different is model choice. Users can connect a third-party model through a proxy, and Janitor+ subscribers get a Router for picking models inside the site. Its help center also has practical guides on writing personas and on managing chat memory with short, structured notes and periodic summaries.

The content rules are detailed and strict on the things that matter. The service is for users over 18, users reasonably suspected of being under 18 are permanently banned, and underage personas are banned in all cases. Adult bots must carry the "Limitless" tag. JanitorAI fits people who want variety for free and are happy to tinker.

AI Dungeon: best for adventure and multiplayer stories

AI Dungeon is built for stories, not one-on-one companions. You play through scenarios as a character, solo or with friends in a multiplayer session. Its App Store listing describes a memory system built on Story Cards and Memory Banks that bring up stored details only when they are relevant.

Its tiers are the most clearly laid out of any app here:

  • Wanderer: free, 25 memories, up to 4k tokens of context.
  • Journey: $14.99 a month, 760 credits, 100 memories, up to 8k.
  • Legend: $29.99 a month, 1,650 credits, 200 memories, up to 16k.
  • Mythic: $49.99 a month, 2,750 credits, 400 memories, up to 32k.
  • Ultimate: $99.99 a month, 5,200 credits, 800 memories, 32k and more with credits.

The safety setting is account-wide, and Mature requires you to confirm you are 18 or older. One quirk: the App Store lists it at 13+, which is why that setting matters. AI Dungeon suits people who think of roleplay as a game with a world, a plot and maybe a party.

NovelAI: best for long-form co-writing

NovelAI is closer to a writing tool than a chat app. You build a story with the model, and the Lorebook holds your world. Entries trigger on keys, support regex, and can be set to always on. It is the app I would point a novelist toward, not someone looking for a chatty partner.

Its free trial, called Paper, gives e-mail verified accounts 50 text generations and 30 image generations. Tablet is $10 a month with unlimited text, Scroll is $15 with a larger context than Tablet, and Opus is $25 with up to 28,672 tokens of context and 10,000 monthly Anlas for images. The docs do not give the Tablet and Scroll context figures, so I left those as not published. The home page says prompts are encrypted and that it does not track your creative process. Age rules and group chat were not on the pages I read.

Character.AI: best if you want it filtered

Character.AI is the name most people start with, and it is the right pick if you want roleplay that stays SFW. Its App Store listing describes millions of user-made characters, character creation with personalities and backstories and no coding, and live voice calls with characters. It is rated 18+ with content restrictions, and it ended open-ended chat for under-18 users by November 25, 2025, according to TechCrunch.

In September 2026 Character.AI introduced a cheaper plan. Its blog says (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week and adds a daily allowance of premium chat styles, fewer ads, extra memory pins and a Memory Usage bar. c.ai+ includes unlimited premium chats, no ads, the "complete memory suite" and Lorebook compatibility. The App Store lists c.ai+ at $9.99 and $94.99 without labeling which is monthly and which is yearly. The free default chat style is PipSqueak 3.

Group chat launched in October 2023 for c.ai+ subscribers, according to Voicebot, but I could not confirm its current status from Character.AI's own pages. Context size is not published.

Kindroid: best for one character you write yourself

Kindroid works best when you want one long-running character with a deep backstory. You define a Kin's name, personality, backstory, appearance and voice, and write key memories yourself. It says each Kin has long-term memory of past conversations, and subscribers get Cascaded Memory.

Group chats let several Kins talk together, and Rooms, in beta, bring friends and their Kins into one shared conversation. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web under one account, and says you must be 18 or older. It does not publish prices on its main page or a content filtering policy.

Nomi: best for memory and group scenes with companions

Nomi sits between a companion app and a roleplay tool. Its home page puts short, medium and long term memory front and center, and lets you put several Nomis in a group chat where they respond to each other. User reviews on the page describe running D&D-style campaigns, solo or in a group. You can write a custom backstory or let a Nomi's personality develop through chat.

It is free to start with no credit card. Prices and an age requirement were not on the page. Nomi suits people who want a companion that also plays along with stories. For a broader view of that category, see our roundup of the best AI companion apps.

SillyTavern: best for full control

SillyTavern is not a service. It is a free, open-source front end, licensed AGPL-3.0, that you install on your own machine. Its docs call it an "LLM Frontend for Power Users." It started in February 2023 as a fork of TavernAI and lists over 300 contributors.

You bring the model. AI Horde works out of the box, and it also connects to OpenAI-compatible APIs, KoboldAI, Tabby, NovelAI and many others. It supports character cards, World Info lorebooks with regex keys and a token budget, and group chats where bots talk to you and to each other. It needs Node.js 20 or newer. For running models on your own computer, the docs suggest an NVIDIA 3000-series GPU with at least 6GB of VRAM.

The trade is effort for control. Setup takes time, and the quality, privacy and filtering depend entirely on what you plug in. If you run a model locally, your chats never leave your machine, which no hosted app here can match.

Chai: best for quick mobile chats

Chai is a mobile-first app for chatting with a large catalog of user-made characters. Its Google Play listing says character creation is open to everyone, and that a character can be kept private or shared. Chai's company site claims 10M+ active users, hundreds of in-house trained models, and an annualized revenue run-rate of $120M as of October 1, 2026. It runs on iOS and Android, with a web version listed as coming soon.

The gaps are real. I could not find official pages on Chai's memory, context size, group chat, content policy or subscription prices. Google Play rates it Mature 17+ and lists in-app items from $0.99 to $899.99. Chai fits casual, short sessions on a phone more than long campaigns, until it publishes more.

OurDream.ai: best for roleplay with images and voice

OurDream.ai is the app our landing pagesends visitors to, so I read it with extra care. It calls itself an "Unlimited AI Roleplay Platform," and its FAQ says companions use "advanced memory systems" to remember past chats. It does not give context or memory figures, so I cannot compare it to SpicyChat or AI Dungeon on that point.

Where it stands out is the visual side. You customize appearance in realistic or anime style, plus personality traits, interests, communication style, relationship dynamics and voice. Both plans include unlimited messages, image and video generation, and 1,000 dreamcoins a month. The monthly plan is $19.99. The yearly plan is $9.99 a month, billed upfront as $119.88. It says to sign up free without listing what the free account includes.

Its written rules ban content involving minors or characters that look underage, and ban deepfakes and lookalikes of real people. The site sits behind an 18+ age confirmation, and the FAQ claims chats are end-to-end encrypted. Group chat is not described on the home page beyond a browsing category. OurDream.ai suits people who want character roleplay with pictures and voice at one flat price.

Best free AI roleplay options

If you want the best free ai roleplay without a card on file, three options stand out on published terms alone.

  1. JanitorAI gives free users unlimited chats with around 9k tokens of context, and says the free tier will always stay.
  2. SpicyChat gives free users 4,096 tokens of context, group chats and lorebooks, with a lower lore budget than paid plans.
  3. SillyTavern is free software. Paired with AI Horde or a model on your own computer, it can cost nothing at all.

AI Dungeon's Wanderer tier, Character.AI's free chat styles, Nomi's free start and Chai's free download are worth a look too. NovelAI's 50 trial generations are enough to judge the writing style, not enough to run a campaign. For partner-style apps specifically, we keep a separate list of free AI girlfriend apps.

How to write a good roleplay character

The same habits work in almost every app here, because they all feed text into a model with a limited window. These steps are drawn from the apps' own guides and from how context works, not from a test of any one product.

  1. Start with voice, not looks. Write three or four lines on how the character talks: short or wordy, formal or casual, dry or warm. That is what you will read for hours.
  2. Keep the card short and factual. JanitorAI's help center recommends short bullet notes in one tense that describe what a character is, not what it does. Long cards eat context that could hold your story.
  3. Write a strong greeting. The first message sets tone, length and point of view. If you want long, descriptive replies, write a long, descriptive greeting.
  4. Add one or two example exchanges. A sample line of dialogue teaches the model the style faster than a paragraph of adjectives.
  5. Move world details into a lorebook. Places, factions and side characters belong in keyword entries, so they only load when they come up. SpicyChat, SillyTavern, NovelAI and AI Dungeon all support this.
  6. Write your own persona. A short card for your character means the bot knows who it is talking to without reminders.
  7. Summarize every so often. JanitorAI suggests pausing the roleplay out of character, asking for a recap, and saving that recap as memory. It works like a save point in a game.
  8. Test memory early. Mention three small details, move on, and ask about them twenty messages later. That tells you more about an app than any feature page.

Privacy and safety

Roleplay chats can get personal fast, so it is worth knowing what each company says it does with them. These are company claims, and I could not verify any of them independently.

  • Kindroid says support cannot read chats and that data is not sold.
  • NovelAI says prompts are encrypted and that it does not track your creative process.
  • OurDream.ai says chats are end-to-end encrypted and that "No one can read them, not even us."
  • SpicyChat says its age verification partner returns only a yes or no, and that SpicyChat never sees or stores your photo or ID.
  • SillyTavern runs on your own machine. With a local model, nothing leaves it. With a cloud API, the API provider's policy applies.

A few habits help whatever app you choose. Keep real names, addresses and workplace details out of stories. Do not upload photos of real people, which several of these platforms ban anyway. Set a monthly spending limit before you start, since credits, coins and swipes add up. And pay attention to how you feel after long sessions. Our guide on whether AI companion apps are safe covers data, money and emotional habits in more detail.

Every app in this guide is meant for adults. If you are under 18, they are not for you.

Which AI roleplay chat should you pick?

There is no single winner, and I would be wary of any list that names one without saying what it optimizes for. Here is how I would match them, using only what the apps publish about themselves.

For classic ai roleplay chat with a big bot library, start with SpicyChat if you want published limits and group scenes, or JanitorAI if you want the most free use and model choice. For stories with a world and a plot, pick AI Dungeon for adventures and multiplayer, or NovelAI for long co-writing. For one character that grows over months, look at Kindroid or Nomi, and our guide to the best AI girlfriend apps compares that side in more depth.

If you want it filtered, Character.AI is the clear choice. If you want total control and do not mind setup, SillyTavern beats everything else on flexibility. And if you want roleplay with generated images and voice in one plan, OurDream.ai is built for that. Since our partner link goes there, weigh that disclosure however you like and compare the prices above yourself.

Try a roleplay platform that starts free

If you want to try character roleplay with images and voice before spending anything, our AI companion page walks you through creating a character and takes you to the partner app, OurDream.ai, where you confirm you are 18 or older. Read its plan and refund terms at checkout, as you would with any app on this list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI chatbot for roleplay?

It depends on your stories. SpicyChat and JanitorAI suit character chat with large bot libraries. AI Dungeon suits adventures and multiplayer, and NovelAI suits long co-writing. Kindroid and Nomi suit one ongoing character. Character.AI is the filtered option, and SillyTavern gives full control if you bring your own model.

What is the best free AI roleplay app?

On published terms, JanitorAI gives free users unlimited chats with about 9k tokens of context. SpicyChat's free tier includes 4,096 tokens, group chats and lorebooks. SillyTavern is free, open-source software that can cost nothing with AI Horde or a local model. AI Dungeon, Character.AI and Nomi also have free starts.

What are the best Character.AI alternatives for roleplay?

People who want fewer filters often look at JanitorAI, SpicyChat, Nomi and AI Dungeon on its Mature setting, which requires confirming you are 18 or older. People who want longer stories look at NovelAI or AI Dungeon. SillyTavern suits users who want to pick their own model and control every setting.

Why does my roleplay bot forget things?

Every model has a context window, which is how much recent text it can see. When a scene scrolls past it, details drop out. JanitorAI's free model holds around 9k tokens, and SpicyChat's free tier holds 4,096. Lorebooks, memory notes and short periodic summaries help keep important details in view.

What is a lorebook in AI roleplay?

A lorebook is a set of entries about places, characters and rules, each tied to keywords. When a keyword appears in the chat, the entry is added to the model's context, then dropped when it is no longer needed. SpicyChat, SillyTavern, NovelAI and AI Dungeon (as Story Cards) all document this feature.

Can you do group roleplay with AI characters?

Yes, in several apps. SpicyChat supports 2 to 10 bots in one group chat for free and paid users. Nomi and Kindroid support group chats, and Kindroid's Rooms beta adds friends. SillyTavern has group chats, and AI Dungeon offers multiplayer sessions. Character.AI launched group chat in 2023 for paid users.

Are AI roleplay apps safe and private?

Each company makes its own claims. Kindroid says data is not sold, NovelAI says prompts are encrypted, and OurDream.ai claims end-to-end encryption. SillyTavern with a local model keeps chats on your own machine. Avoid sharing real names or addresses, set a spending limit, and remember these apps are for adults only.
