Two names are missing on purpose. Character.AI's community guidelines prohibit "pornographic content, and nudity," so it is not an NSFW chat app, whatever forum threads say about filters. Replika removed adult roleplay in early 2023 and brought it back only for accounts created before February 1, 2023. Its current terms ban pornographic uploads. Both are covered in more detail further down.

How this comparison was made

I did not subscribe to seven adult chat apps and log hours in each. This guide is based on each app's own published pages: home pages, pricing pages, terms of service, community guidelines, help centers and App Store listings. Two news reports fill in the history for Replika and Character.AI.

That method has a limit, and you should know it. I can tell you what an app says it allows, what it charges and what it claims about privacy. I cannot tell you how a given character writes, how often a filter kicks in on a borderline scene, or whether the memory still works after three weeks. Those are things to test on a free tier yourself.

I also tried to answer a question most lists skip: does the app actually permit adult chat according to its own rules? A page title that says "no filter" is marketing. The community guidelines are the contract. Where those two disagree, I quote both.

What counts as NSFW AI chat

NSFW AI chat means an AI chatbot for adults that will take part in romantic, flirty or sexual roleplay instead of refusing it. Most of these apps work the same way. You pick a character someone else wrote, or build your own, then chat in text. Some add voice replies, generated pictures, or video.

The rules underneath are where they differ. Text and images are often treated separately. JanitorAI allows adult text between adult characters but bans pornographic images entirely. SpicyChat allows NSFW chatbots and some NSFW images but bans photorealistic porn. CrushOn's guidelines say to avoid depicting explicit sexual activity in imagery and allow implied activity. OurDream.ai is the most open on images, saying users can generate NSFW images and videos of their companions.

Every app here shares a few hard lines. All of them restrict use to adults. All of them ban content involving minors, and most say characters must be clearly over 18, including characters who look young. Most also ban realistic images of real people. If an app you find does not have rules like these written down, that tells you something about it.

The apps, one at a time

OurDream.ai

Best for: people who want adult chat, images and video under one flat subscription. OurDream.ai is the app our AI companion page links to, so I read its pages with extra care.

What's allowed:the site is labeled "Adults Only" and describes itself as a no limits platform where you can roleplay any fantasy you like. It says users can generate NSFW images and videos of their AI companions. Its FAQ sets clear exclusions: strict rules against content with minors, including "characters that look underage," and a ban on deepfakes and lookalikes of real people, including celebrities. It says accounts that break these rules may be suspended and that moderation systems watch for violations.

Free tier: the site says you can sign up for free, but it does not describe what the free account includes.

Price: the clearest pricing in this group. Monthly is $19.99. Yearly is $9.99 a month, billed upfront as one $119.88 payment. Both plans include unlimited messages with any AI character, image and video generation, and 1,000 dreamcoins each month. The yearly plan adds a one-time bonus of 1,000 dreamcoins. The site does not publish what each image or video costs in dreamcoins.

Privacy:the site says chats use end-to-end encryption and that "no one can read them, not even us." It does not give technical detail, and it also says the companion learns from your chats over time. Treat the encryption line as a company claim.

Watch-outs: age checking is a self-declaration button that says you are over 18. There is no described verification step. The yearly plan is one upfront charge, so try a month first if you are unsure.

Candy.ai

Best for: building a companion from detailed choices about looks, personality and voice, then chatting with images and voice on top.

What's allowed:Candy.ai's home page describes "uncensored fantasy experiences" and says interactions must comply with its Community Guidelines. The terms I read do not say in plain words whether sexual content is permitted, and they hand content standards to separate guidelines and a blocked content policy. What the terms do say clearly is that Candy.ai has a zero tolerance policy toward child sexual abuse material and reports it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or local authorities.

Free tier: the home page mentions a free trial without spelling out limits. The terms are more specific: free users may generally send a maximum of 5 messages to AI characters. That is a test drive, not a free plan.

Price: the home page lists monthly, quarterly and yearly plans and a discount label, but no base prices on the pages I could read, so the table says not published. Subscribers get unlimited messaging and tokens for voice, images and video, which the terms put at generally 100 a month. The home page warns that more detailed companions use more tokens, and unused tokens expire at the end of the billing period.

Privacy: Candy.ai says data in transit uses TLS 1.2 or higher, says it follows GDPR-compliant standards, and says charges appear under a neutral merchant name. It accepts cards and several cryptocurrencies.

Watch-outs: the refund window is short. The terms say requests must come within 24 hours of payment and are denied if more than 20 tokens have been used. EU and UK users get a 14-day withdrawal right on the first purchase, not on renewals. On age, the terms set the minimum at the legal age to form a binding contract where you live and say Candy.ai may ask you to verify that you are an adult.

SpicyChat

Best for: browsing a large library of community-made characters and chatting free, with ads, before deciding whether to pay.

What's allowed: SpicyChat has the most detailed public content rules in this group. Its community guidelines say chatbots with explicit language or imagery must be marked as NSFW, which means adult chat is permitted when it is labeled. NSFW GIFs are allowed if they are not hardcore. The same guidelines ban photorealistic pornographic content, plain images of genitalia, non-consensual scenarios even in fiction, and mixing extreme violence with sexual content. Family roleplay and incest themes are banned.

On age, the guidelines say all users must be at least 18 and every chatbot must be portrayed as an adult over 18. Bots with youthful or childlike demeanors are reviewed one by one even if they are labeled 18+. Bots based on real, private or lesser-known people are banned, and public figures are allowed only without real or realistic imagery.

Free tier:SpicyChat's help center says it is committed to keeping core features free for everyone, and the first paid tier's headline feature is chat without ads. The site does not publish a daily message cap for free users on the pages I read.

Price:three paid tiers. SpicyChat's pricing FAQ lists US prices since September 8, 2026: Get A Taste at $5.95 a month or $60 a year, True Supporter at $19.95 or $199.95, and I'm All In at $29.95 or $299.95. Prices shown in other countries may differ. Get a Taste removes ads and lets the AI remember key details. True Supporter adds about twice the memory, unlimited in-chat images, longer replies and more models. I'm All In adds the most memory (it says 8x), its best models and voice replies.

Privacy: the pages I read did not make specific claims about chat encryption, so I am marking that as not published. The company lists operating entities in Canada, the US and Cyprus, and publishes a privacy policy and a content removal policy.

Watch-outs: the age rule is stated, but I did not find a described age verification method on the pages I read. Community characters vary a lot in quality, which is the trade-off of any open library.

CrushOn

Best for: people who like browsing by tags and want long memory windows on paid plans.

What's allowed:this is the app where marketing and rules diverge the most. CrushOn's page title and description promise NSFW character chat without filters, and many of its browse tags carry an "Unfiltered" label. Its community guidelines are more careful. They say to avoid depicting explicit sexual activity and stimulation, and that implied sexual activity is permitted when contextually appropriate. They also ban realistic images of real people, minors and characters whose age is not clearly over 18, including "aged-up" characters from source material. Profile pictures and bios must be suitable for general display.

Read literally, that imagery rule is aimed at depictions, so adult text roleplay appears to be the core use, with stricter limits on pictures. The guidelines also say CrushOn is available only to users 18 and older.

Free tier: the most clearly documented free plan in this list. Free accounts get 100 message credits a month, unlimited access to the free models, 8K memory, 200 stored messages per character, and 20 inspiration replies a day. One detail matters: on the free plan, chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Pro models cost credits and the top models are unavailable.

Price: paid tiers run from Standard through Premium, Luxe, Elite and Imperial, with monthly credits ranging from 2,000 on Standard to 55,000 on Elite, and memory up to 24K on the higher plans. When I loaded the pricing page, every tier displayed the same $39.99 monthly and $299.99 yearly figure, which looks like a display issue rather than real pricing, so I am not quoting per-tier prices. There is also a separate Pro models chat package listed at $39.99 for 30 days or $299.99 for a year.

Privacy: the guidelines say CrushOn uses human moderators and automated systems to review accounts, characters and interactions. That is normal for a moderated platform, but it does mean chats are not private from the company. I did not find a chat encryption claim.

Watch-outs: the credit system is layered: monthly credits, bonus credits, capacity expansions and a separate chat package. Read what your tier actually includes before you buy add-ons.

JanitorAI

Best for: free adult text roleplay, and people who want to plug in their own AI model.

What's allowed:JanitorAI's community guidelines, last updated February 4, 2026, say the platform "permits adult content between consenting adult characters." It then lists exclusions: incest between blood relatives, age regression, necrophilia and sexualized real animals. Images are stricter than text. Pornographic images and images showing sexual activity or nudity are not permitted at all.

The child safety section is the most detailed of any app here. Users must be 18 or older, and the guidelines say users reasonably suspected of being under 18 are permanently banned. Characters must be both physically and mentally over 18, and characters whose age is unclear are not allowed.

Free tier:JanitorAI is free to use, with about 9k context on the free plan according to its janitor+ page. The founder's note on that page says "the free version is not going anywhere." That makes it one of the strongest free NSFW AI chat options in this list.

Price: janitor+ is $12.99 a month or $99 a year (about $8.25 a month). It lists five times more context, faster replies when the site is busy, enhanced swipes and more models. Its help center says janitor+ subscribers also get Router, which lets you use third-party models inside JanitorAI with per-token pricing paid from a built-in wallet. Router credits expire a year after they are claimed and are non-refundable except where the law requires. Router is web only for now.

Privacy: not published on the pages I read beyond a linked privacy policy. If you connect an outside model, your chat text also goes to that provider, so their policy applies too.

Nomi

Best for: people who want a companion that remembers them, with romance as one option among friendship, mentorship and roleplay.

What's allowed:Nomi's home page says it is built on freedom of expression and that "the only way AI can live up to its potential is to remain unfiltered and uncensored." It names girlfriend, boyfriend and fantasy partner as uses. Its terms of service do not mention sexual or adult content either way, so the permission comes from the home page stance rather than a written content policy.

Free tier: free to start, no credit card required. The home page does not say what the free tier includes.

Price: not published on the home page or in the terms. The terms say fees are billed in US dollars and that Nomi can raise subscription prices at any time, with increases applying at the next renewal.

Privacy: Nomi says all chats are anonymized and no chat data is shared with third-party sites.

Watch-outs: the terms say users under 18 cannot use the platform under any circumstances and that suspected underage accounts will be suspended or terminated. They also say all payments are non-refundable except as stated, and that there are no refunds for lack of use or dissatisfaction. Try the free tier properly before you pay.

Kindroid

Best for:writers and tinkerers who would rather author a character's personality, backstory and voice than pick a preset.

What's allowed:this is the one to be careful about. Kindroid's own pages do not say whether adult content is allowed. Its terms ban content that could be classified as child sexual abuse material and say it does not allow intimate images of real people. The App Store listing rates the app 18+ with content restrictions, and lists infrequent sexual content or nudity and mature or suggestive themes. User reviews on that listing disagree about how much it permits. I would not call it an NSFW app on the strength of its own pages, so test it before you pay.

Free tier: the home page says new accounts can try it before subscribing. Its age verification help page describes a limited free preview, after which free users must start a trial or subscription.

Price: the home page does not list prices. The US App Store shows a Kindroid Subscription at $15.99, yearly at $159.99, three months at $42.99, Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99, plus add-ons such as selfie credits and extra character slots.

Privacy: the most candid privacy policy here. Kindroid says chats, audio, selfies and memories are encrypted in storage and in transit and that it does not sell data. Its privacy policy also says plainly that Kindroid is not end-to-end encrypted, that support staff cannot browse your chats, and that authorized staff may review excerpts flagged by automated safety systems. Chats are kept until you delete the character or your account.

Watch-outs: Kindroid has the most serious age checks in this group. Paying verifies age through your payment method. Free accounts are passively assessed, and a flagged account must verify through Yoti, by selfie age estimate or government ID, before using the app again. The terms say Kindroid will not refund fees already paid.

Apps that don't allow NSFW chat

Character.AI

Character.AI is the most popular character chat app, and people often search for ways around its filter. Its community guidelines settle the question. They welcome "passionate romance" as a genre, but list pornographic content and nudity as prohibited alongside illegal sexual content. If you want adult chat, Character.AI is the wrong tool, and filter workarounds risk your account.

It has also changed who can chat. TechCrunch reported in October 2025 that Character.AI would remove open-ended chats for users under 18 by November 25, 2025, using behavior-based age checks, a third-party provider called Persona, and ID or face checks as a fallback.

Replika

Replika's history with adult roleplay is a lesson in why policies matter. Reuters, as republished by Inquirer Technology, reported that Replika removed adult content in February 2023 and then restored erotic roleplay in March 2023, but only for users who signed up before February 1, 2023. Users who joined later did not get the option.

Its current terms say users under 18 are not authorized, ban pornographic or obscene uploads, and include a "relationship status" feature in the Pro tier. Romance, yes. An adult chat app, no, and I did not find anything on Replika's current pages that says the 2023 legacy option is still offered.

"Free NSFW AI chat" is one of the most searched phrases in this space, and the answer is more uneven than most lists admit. Here is what each app's own pages say about free use.

Two things stand out. Only Kindroid describes a real age verification process, and only Kindroid says plainly where its encryption stops. Most others rely on you confirming your age. That is common, but it means the protection is the rule itself, not a check.

Some practical habits help whichever app you pick. Keep your real name, address, workplace and photos of real people out of chats. Use a separate email for adult accounts. Check how the charge appears on your statement, since Candy.ai is the only one here that says it uses a neutral name.
